The Effect of Exercise on Maternal Health
Regular Exercise at moderate to somewhat hard levels of intensity during pregnancy has positive benefits as shown by current research. Some of the many benefits include reduced fat deposition and retention, shorter and less complicated labors, higher energy levels, fewer physical complaints, and a quicker postpartum recovery.

Recent studies have found no adverse short or long term fetal or maternal health problems associates with regular engagement in exercise during a non complicated pregnancy.

Cardiorespiratory Health
A pregnant woman will be able to tolerate the stresses of pregnancy and the physical event of labor and birthing. (Bell, O'Neill, and Dip,,1994)

Musculoskeletal Health
Maintaining muscle strength and endurance helps to support increased breast size, additional weight, and postural changes that occur during pregnancy.[ACSM],1995

Physical Well-Being
Fewer symptoms common to pregnancy such as nausea, fatigue, leg cramps, round ligament pain, and backache. Exercise helps to avoid excessive weight gain, constipation, digestion, varicose veins and general body discomforts. Promotes better sleep and less weight gain.(Sternfeld,1997)

Psychological Well-Being
Improved self-esteem and body image. Exercise can elevate mood, stimulate energy levels and counteract the feeling of stress, anxiety or depression that occur during pregnancy.(ACSM, 1995)

Labor and Delivery
Women who continued to exercise throughout pregnancy had a higher incidence of uncomplicated, spontaneous delivery and a shorter labor. (Clapp and Dickstein 1984)
